Workshop: Derbyshire Dye Camp

Crazy about colour?  Previously attended a dyeing workshop at Peak District Yarns?  Really got the dyeing bug?  Come and learn advanced techniques, and hang out with Carrie in her dye studio for three full days, with an optional fourth day were you have the dye studio to yourself for self-guided learning (but Carrie will be on hand to answer any questions you have!)

The content of Dye Camp is shaped around what participants wish to learn, but typically includes advanced yarn dyeing techniques; how to get the best dyeing results from luxury yarns (yak, camel, alpaca etc); dyeing sock blanks; dyeing self-striping yarn; establishing a yarn dyeing business; and generally playing with colour in the Dye Studio.

The total cost of the three-day Dye Camp is £475, and £50 for the optional ‘self-guided’ learning day.  Dye Camps typically run on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday with the optional fourth day scheduled for the Thursday, Friday or Saturday of the same week.  Dates for Dye Camp are flexible – please get in touch to discuss options.

Ten skeins of yarn are included in the price of the 3-day Dye Camp, and you can purchase more during the week if you want to try other bases whilst you’re here.

Maximum of 3 participants per workshop. We keep class sizes very small so that there can be a lot of time for individual instruction and guidance. Each participant works on projects they determine for themselves.  You’ll be encouraged to share your experiences with other participants – and are likely to learn as much from them as you are from Carrie!  Note that Dye Camp is quite an intense three days, and you are likely to be on your feet for a lot of the time.  Comfy shoes are a must!

The workshop will run from 10am to 5pm on the three days of Dye Camp, and we’ll take an hour’s break for lunch each day.  Lunch is not provided, but we do have a good selection of cafes in the village.  You are welcome to add on a further day and do some self-guided practice using the Dye Studio (with full use of equipment and dyes) for £50 plus yarn – this can be on the Thurs, Fri or Sat of the same week.

Dye Camp will definitely run on the following dates. Other dates may be possible – please contact Carrie for a chat:

Sun – Tues 30th June /1st July/2nd July 2024 – one space available
Sun – Tues – 4th/5th/6th August 2024 – three spaces available

To book on the Dye Camp, please contact Carrie for an initial chat about dates and to discuss what you would be wanting to learn on the course.  As this is an advanced class, you either need to have attended one or more of the Peak District Yarns workshop, or be able to evidence some previous experience of dyeing yarn.

If you are not local, you are encouraged to book accommodation in the lovely village of Tideswell to help minimise your impact on the environment and help keep my lovely village a vibrant place to live! Why not extend your stay and explore the lovely Peak District whilst you’re here?  We have a good range of accommodation in the village – see www.visittideswell.co.uk or contact Carrie for advice.  If people are staying locally for the Dye Camp, we will have the option to meet up as a group in the evenings for an informal meal (this is purely optional and not included in the price of the Dye Camp).

Skill level:  Advanced

As always with our workshops tea, coffee and cake are provided (let us know when you book about any dietary requirements).

All materials you will use during the workshop are included.  You may wish to bring a notebook for making notes.  We recommend that you wear old clothing and shoes or bring your own pinny – we will be messing around with colour, after all!

Cancellations by us:
Dye Camp may be cancelled no less than a month before if there are insufficient numbers to reasonably justify going ahead.  We will contact you as soon as possible if cancellation is likely.

If we regrettably have to cancel Dye Camp for any reason, you will receive a full refund or transfer to another workshop if feasible.  If we do cancel Dye Camp, we cannot be held liable for any travel or accommodation costs you incur.

Cancellations by you:
If we can fill your spot with another student then you will receive a full refund for the cost of the workshop.  If we can’t fill your spot with another student, then you will be charged for the workshop.  The less notice you give us of your cancellation, the less likely it is that the ticket can be resold – please bear that in mind.
