Description
New for 2026, come and spend a day as a dyer at the Peak District Yarns Studio. This very flexible (and occasionally chaotic!) day will allow you to turn your dyeing ideas into beautiful hand-dyed yarn.
We start the day with some colour-mixing exercises to allow you to explore the dye shades you might want to use in your main project. Then, under the watchful eye of the tutors, you prepare your chosen yarn, choose your dyeing method and have fun dyeing your yarn. Your yarn choices will be chosen in advance so we can make sure there is enough of your chosen yarn in stock for you to dye, and you will also have the option to join a Whatsapp group with fellow participants to share your project ideas before and after the workshop (we *love* seeing finished items!)
The yarn you dye on a Dye Day is not included in the website price of the Dye Day workshop – you pay on the day of the workshop for the skeins you dye at the workshop. The price per skein ranges from £13 (e.g., a 100g skein of merino/nylon sock yarn) to £20 (e.g., a 115g skein of luxury silk, merino, alpaca 4-ply). You will find a menu of available yarn options here, and Carrie will contact you after you have booked to discuss what you would like to dye.
Here are examples of dye techniques you could choose. There’s usually sufficient time to choose two dyeing projects:
- Hand paint a skein for a pair of socks, and maybe a contrast mini skein to go with it
- Create a mini skein set
- Create a fade set (mini skeins or full skeins)
- Create up to eight skeins of semi-solid yarn
- Dye a sock blank
If you don’t have a specific idea for a project to dye the yarn for, then no problem. You can still have a fab day in the Dye Studio! The default option is to have fun dyeing a set of 5 mini skeins and hand-painting a skein of yarn.
Maximum 5 participants per workshop. As all participants may choose a completely different dyeing technique to do on their Dye Day, you are encouraged to learn from the activities of fellow participants…..particularly if there is a queue for any of the dyeing equipment during the day!
This is an intermediate-level workshop, and the basics of yarn dyeing are not covered in this workshop. If you are a complete beginner, we ask that you attend the Introduction to Yarn Dyeing workshop before attending this one.
This workshop is a full day, running from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Teas, coffees and biscuits are provided through the day (let us know on booking of any dietary requirements). Lunch is not provided – you can either bring a packed lunch with you, or pop out to the local shops/cafe to grab something if you prefer.
Like most of our workshops, this is a great day to do with your yarnie friends. Do get in contact if you would like to arrange a private workshop for just you and your group.
We recommend that you wear old clothing and shoes or bring your own pinny – we will be messing around with colour, after all!
Note that we do not allow participants to bring their own undyed yarn to dye on a Dye Day workshop. Any undyed yarn used on a Dye Day workshop has to be purchased from PDY. Sometimes, for factors outside our control, we may not be able to source the yarn you want to dye (e.g., our supplier is occasionally out of stock of a specific yarn). If this is the case, we will suggest alternatives for you to use.
Age: You have to be at least 14 years old to attend this workshop. Participants aged under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult, who must also to be booked onto the workshop.
Cancellations by us:
Workshops may be cancelled the week before if there are insufficient numbers to reasonably justify going ahead. We will contact you as soon as possible if cancellation is likely.
If we regrettably have to cancel the workshop for any reason, you will receive a full refund or transfer to another workshop if feasible. If we do cancel a workshop, we cannot be held liable for any travel or accommodation costs you incur.
Cancellations by you:
If we can fill your space with another student then you will receive a full refund for the cost of the workshop. If we can’t fill your space with another student, then you will be charged for the workshop. The less notice you give us of your cancellation, the less likely it is that your space can be resold – please bear this in mind.
